Overlocking

Card 12 · Start Sewing

Seal an edge so it won’t fray.

To seal a fabric edge and stop it fraying, the edge needs to be stitched over. Zig-zag stitch on a domestic machine is good for beginners. An overlock stitch needs an over-locker machine.

Try it!

☐ Use your domestic sewing machine to over-lock a fabric edge, using zig-zag stitch.

☐ Set zig-zag stitch to 2–3 length and 3–4 wide.

☐ Stitch close to the fabric edge, without going off the edge.

☐ You may also use an overedge or overcast machine foot.

Top tip: An over-locker can sew stretchy fabrics together, over-locking the edges and joining the seam at the same time.
