Cutting on the Fold

Card 36 · Using Patterns

Cut a full piece from folded fabric.

Some pattern pieces are cut with the fabric folded in half along the grain-line. This is called cutting on the fold. The fold-line piece opens out into one full piece, and Cut 2 gives you a left and a right.

Try it!

☐ Fold the fabric in half along the grain-line.

☐ Place pieces marked fold-line on the folded edge (the centre fold).

☐ Place pieces marked Cut 2 anywhere else on the fabric.

☐ Check every grain-line arrow is on the grain-line, then cut through both layers.

Top tip: With patterned fabric, such as pictures or stripes, make sure every piece faces the right way and the grain-line arrow is on the grain-line.
