Card 28 · Dressmaking
Folds that shape bust, waist and shoulders.
Darts are where fabric is folded to give a garment shape, usually at the bust, waist and shoulders. Patterns show them as triangles and diamonds. Watch a video demonstration to learn how to sew one.
- Mark darts with notches at the base and a chalk mark at the point.
- Stitch with a slight curve so they are less pointy.
- Continue the stitch line right to the dart point, as close to the fabric edge as possible.

Top tip: Darts can be moved or taken out to change the fit of a garment. This is called pattern cutting, and you can do it on shop-bought patterns.
