Notches

Card 27 · Dressmaking

Marks that show what joins where.

Notches are marks cut into fabric. They act like instructions, showing how pieces need to be sewn together. They mark hems, darts, sleeves and fastenings. Patterns show them as diamonds or triangles, cut into the fabric as small triangles.

  • Single notches = front of garment.
  • Double notches = back of garment.

Top tip: Notching the seam allowance can make it clearer where to start and end sewing.
