Facing

Card 19 · Dressmaking

A neat finish for necklines and edges.

Facing is a smaller piece of fabric stitched to a garment to make an edge look neater. It is usually found on necklines, armholes, lapels, cuffs, collars and waistbands. Top stitching helps it stay in place.

Try it!

☐ Attach the facing and, if needed, snip the seam allowance.

☐ Push all the seam allowance onto the main garment and iron flat.

☐ Turn the fabric right way up and top stitch the garment.

☐ Stitch a line 0.5cm away from the seam line.

Top tip: When curved facing is stitched onto collars, sleeves and necklines, the seam allowance usually needs snipping. See the Curves card for how.
