Interfacing

Card 20 · Dressmaking

Give cuffs, collars and bags body.

Interfacing is a soft fabric stitched into clothes and bags, usually in cuffs, collars, waistbands, bags, purses and coasters. It comes in many weights. Choose one the same weight as your fabric, or a bit lighter.

  • Light-weight interfacing works for most dressmaking.
  • Iron-on interfacing can be easier to use than non-fusible.
  • Stretchy clothes are usually not interfaced.

Try it!

☐ Interface a piece of fabric with light-weight iron-on interfacing.

☐ Stitch a piece of non-fusible interfacing onto fabric.

Top tip: When making bags, use a few layers of calico instead of heavy interfacing. It gives the bag weight without creasing and folding.
