Ironing

Card 21 · Dressmaking

Iron as you go for a neat finish.

Keep the iron next to you and iron as you go. It is especially important for seams, facing and hems. A domestic iron is fine. If you do a lot of dressmaking, a steam generator iron is better.

Try it!

☐ Fold seams out and iron them flat.

☐ Iron neck facing flat once it is turned right side out.

☐ Iron hems flat before stitching.

☐ Sew a seam, fold it out and iron it flat.

Top tip: Always cover your fabric before ironing to stop it burning. Baking paper or a piece of cotton fabric works well.
