Straight stitch and zig-zag stitch.
When learning how to sew, start with just two machine stitches. Both can be done on a domestic sewing machine.
- Straight stitch is for sewing most things: cushions, bags and clothes.
- The standard length for straight stitch is a setting of 2–3.
- Zig-zag stitch stops the edges of your fabric fraying. Check your manual to change its length and width.

☐ Sew a zig-zag stitch. Experiment with the stitch length and width.
Top tip: You may also use an over-locker machine to stop the edges of your fabric fraying. It gives a more professional finish than zig-zag stitching.
