Pins

Card 15 · Start Sewing

Hold fabric together before you stitch.

Dressmaking pins hold fabric together before stitching. Pins with large plastic or glass heads can get caught in the machine, so use plain steel dressmaking pins.

  • Always put pins in at right angles to the line you’ll stitch, so the machine can sew over them.
  • Use plain steel dressmaking pins.

Try it!

☐ Pin two pieces of fabric together, inserting the pins horizontally.

☐ Stitch the fabric together, sewing over the pins.

Top tip: When checking how clothes fit before sewing, try tacking stitch instead of pins. It holds the garment together better and is easy to remove after the final stitching.
