Card 16 · Start Sewing
Turn and cut sharp corners.
To turn a corner when stitching, lower the needle into the fabric. The needle holds the fabric in place while you turn it.
When two pieces are sewn together inside out, such as a cushion or collar, the corners need cutting before you turn it the right way round.
- Cut off the seam allowance across the corner.
- Cut a diagonal line.
- Cut close to the stitching, but not through it.
- Then turn the item the right way round.

Try it!
☐ Sew a right-angle corner by keeping the needle in the fabric.
☐ Snip diagonally across the corner to cut off the seam allowance.
Top tip: To sharpen corners, use a blunt pencil to gently push them out.
