Thread Machine

Card 06 · Your Machine

Thread it right and it keeps sewing.

When a domestic sewing machine is threaded correctly, the top thread follows the shape of the letter “N”. The bottom thread is wound on a spool (bobbin) and placed in the spool case.

A machine that is threaded incorrectly can stop sewing. Check these points to avoid it.

Try it!

☐ Check the top thread is between the tension discs.

☐ Set the tension to about 3–4 for general sewing.

☐ Make sure the thread is wound tightly on the spool.

☐ Use the thread retainer disc on the top thread.

☐ The bobbin thread unwinds anti-clockwise.

☐ Needle not moving? Release the bobbin winder.

Top tip: Remember: plastic to plastic, metal to metal! Spools (bobbins) come in plastic and metal, and different machines take different ones. Plastic spools usually drop into a plastic case on the machine. Metal spools go in a removable metal spool case.
