Encased and attached elastic.
Elastic gives garments shape and helps them fit. It is usually used in waists, cuffs, collars and scrunchies. It can be inserted into a case, such as a waistband, or sewn onto the garment.
- Encased elastic: use a bodkin to pull the elastic through the waistband case.
- Attached elastic: stretch it to the length of the fabric and stitch on with zig-zag.
- For a waist, measure the body and take off 5cm.

Top tip: Elastic can be used instead of darts and fiddly fastenings to give a garment shape, while still letting it go on and off easily.
